Murder charges dropped in 2015 shooting of Aurora teen

Prosecutors have dismissed first-degree murder charges against an Aurora teen accused of shooting a 17-year-old in February 2015, according to court records and the teen's defense attorney.

Gabriel I. Barron, 17, of the 300 block of Marion Avenue, had been held on $2 million bail on first-degree murder charges in the Feb. 27, 2015, death of Gianni Aguirre.

Barron was released last week after Kane County prosecutors dropped the charges. He was 16 when charged as an adult.

Police said the two argued outside of a home on the 100 block of Bluff Street and Barron shot and killed Aguirre.

Defense attorney Liam Dixon contended Aguirre fired first and Barron returned fire in self-defense.

“(Aguirre's) girlfriend initially said he was not armed. The police found that to be incorrect,” said Dixon, adding that gunshot residue tests confirmed Aguirre had a gun.

Dixon credited the Kane County state's attorney's office for dismissing the case in the face of scientific evidence that pointed toward his client's innocence.

“They did the right thing,” Dixon said.

Barron faced between 45 and 85 years in prison with no chance of early release.
