North: Why trading Cutler makes sense for Bears

If you are a die-hard Chicago Bears fan who agrees with whatever move the team makes, then this column is not for you.

If you think the Bears are going to the Super Bowl every year, then don't read any further.

If your bedroom or some part of your house is painted in the blue and orange, then find something else to read.

But if you are a realistic Bears fan, then listen up.

Let's be clear about this: I don't think we are in for any big surprises like when the Bears went to the Super Bowl in 2006 with Rex Grossman.

Since Dallas quarterback Tony Romo injured his back in Thursday night's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, there have been several reports saying he might retire.

On Sunday, I suggested a trade on Twitter. I proposed the Bears trade Jay Cutler to the Cowboys for a player or two and multiple picks.

That's right! And I received mostly positive reactions to my suggestion.

The Bears need starters and depth and a Cutler trade could generate some of that.

Cutler needs talent around him and there just isn't a lot here, and I also believe he's missing the “it” factor.

I was watching the preseason game versus Kansas City and analyst Jim Miller commented that Bears receivers, such as Alshon Jeffery, should catch everything that hit their hands. Spoken like a former quarterback, because not all those balls were well-thrown.

I think Dallas is desperate and Dak Prescott looks great as a backup QB, but can he continue to be the sensation of the preseason? It's a long shot, but Cutler is Romo-light and maybe Cutler can succeed with a great offensive line like they have in Dallas.

Cutler might do better with a change of scenery while the Bears get some new talent.

Colin Kaepernick might have been a good option for Dallas, but it appears he sabotaged his career by not standing for the national anthem in a political protest during a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Cutler is a better QB than Kaepernick anyway.

Dallas fans would love Cutler and general manager Ryan Pace would have multiple picks with maybe a current player or two, enough to help improve the Bears and maybe make them a contender on a regular basis by 2018.

Cutler could realistically get the Cowboys into the playoffs. As for Bears fans asking who will QB, well maybe Rex can make a comeback.
