Illinois says forward Nichols can begin playing in December

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Illinois says that the NCAA has decided forward Kipper Nichols will have to sit out the fall semester before playing for the Illini.

The program said late Thursday that Nichols will be eligible to play after the end of the semester. That means his first game could be Illinois' Dec. 17 contest with BYU.

Nichols is a redshirt freshman who initially committed to Tulane but never enrolled. The school granted the Cleveland, Ohio, native his release and he came to Illinois in December.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Nichols sat out the spring semester, too.

He has 3ˆ½ years of eligibility remaining.
