Indianapolis police ID officer, victim in mistaken shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police have identified an Indianapolis police officer who mistakenly shot and badly wounded an armed homeowner who was trying to protect his wife during an attempted robbery.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives say the homeowner is 48-year-old Carl Williams of Indianapolis and the officer is Christopher Mills. Police say Mills is a nine-year veteran.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday after police were called about an armed robbery.

Police are searching for a suspect who they say fled and was wearing a red and white jacket and dark ball cap.

The police department said it would "like to continue to extend our collective thoughts and prayers" to Williams as he recuperates. The department said its Community Response Team was available for Williams' family.
