U of Illinois flagship campus may have record freshman class

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - Preliminary enrollment figures from the University of Illinois' flagship campus indicate this fall's incoming class may set a record.

According to The News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/2bg3Pjg ), freshman enrollment at the Urbana-Champaign campus was 7,600 on Monday, the first day of classes. That would be an increase from last year's 7,565 and the record 7,583 in the fall of 2005.

This fall's figure is likely to change slightly when the official numbers are released on the 10th day of classes.

Total first-day enrollment was 43,893. That would be an increase of 712 students from last fall.

Some state schools have projected smaller enrollments this fall due to concerns over Illinois' cuts in funding for public universities and financial aid amid the state budget crisis.
