Parents charged after kids found in 'deplorable' conditions

FARMLAND, Ind. (AP) - The parents of three Indiana children who authorities say were found living in "deplorable conditions" in a mobile home are in custody.

Forty-four-year-old Ralph McKinney Jr. and 32-year-old Amy McKinney have been preliminarily charged with three counts of neglect of a dependent. They're being held in the Randolph County jail in Winchester. Bond has been set at $5,000 each.

Authorities say the deplorable conditions included animal feces and cockroaches. Investigators also found a dead rat in the freezer on top of frozen food.

County Sheriff Ken Hendrickson calls the trailer in rural Randolph County among "the worst living conditions" he's seen in nearly three decades of law enforcement.

The three children, ages 11, 16 and 17, were to be placed with Child Protective Services.

Health officials have condemned the trailer.
