Terre Haute middle school closing temporarily over bats

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - The Vigo County School Corp. is temporarily closing a Terre Haute school where bats have hit a custodian in the head and another worker in the chest.

Superintendent Dan Tanoos said Tuesday that Sarah Scott Middle School will be closed beginning Wednesday and students bused to another middle school. He says the closure will extend into next week.

However, WTHI-TV reported some parents were removing their children from Sarah Scott at midday Tuesday.

Tanoos says the closure wasn't immediate because some students may not have parents home and might be unable to get inside during inclement weather.

He says no students have been touched by bats and bats haven't been seen in the school during the day.

School officials earlier had closed the school's gymnasium because bats were present.
