Belgian police shoot gunman in downtown Ghent

BRUSSELS (AP) - Belgian media reports say police have shot an armed man who refused to hand over a gun he was carrying in the city of Ghent, with the country still on high alert in the wake of suicide attacks in Brussels in March.

Flemish Broadcaster VTM said the incident occurred in Ghent around 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Sunday after bystanders warned police that an armed man was running down a street in the city center.

Prosecutors' spokeswoman Julie Van Hoorebeke was quoted as saying that the incident probably wasn't linked to terrorism.

It's unclear what condition the suspected gunman is in. No one else was wounded.

Brussels' airport and subway was hit March 22 by suicide bombings that killed 32 people. That attack was claimed by the Islamic State group.
