Baggies begin with a win over Palace in EPL

LONDON (AP) - West Bromwich Albion began the new Premier League season with a promising 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Midlands club took all three points as Salomon Rondon's second-half header in the 74th minute proved enough to defeat uninspiring Palace at Selhurst Park.

It was the Baggies' first competitive fixture since it was announced that Chinese investor Guochuan Lai had agreed a takeover deal.

Alan Pardew's Palace had been the more creative team without looking likely to score amid West Brom's impressive defending.

From a 74th-minute free-kick, substitute James McClean crossed toward Rondon and the striker, under little pressure, comfortably headed beyond Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey inside the far post.
