Southern IN man gets 85 years for slaying of store owner

AUSTIN, Ind. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a southern Indiana man to 85 years in prison for killing a jewelry store owner during a robbery.
Twenty-year-old James Caudill of Austin was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to murder, robbery and a firearms sentencing enhancement. Under a plea agreement, he avoided a sentence of life without parole.
Caudill was charged in connection with the Nov. 7 shooting death of 78-year-old John Turner of John's Coin and Jewelry in Austin, about 30 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky.
Turner's daughter, Bonnie Comer, testified her father was a Christian who "loved his shop, and I think he just loved being with people."
Caudill's lawyer said they plan to appeal the sentence.
