The unassuming teenager from suburban Washington has dominated the longer freestyle events since winning gold in the 800 free at the London Olympics as a 15-year-old. Meanwhile Michael Phelps has to clear out more space in his medal case. With yet another dazzling performance, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history added to his staggering haul Sunday night in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, giving the United States a lead it never relinquished. Williams sisters lose Olympic doubles match for first time

Three-time doubles gold medalists Serena and Venus Williams lost an Olympic match as partners for the first time, stunned in the opening round of the Rio de Janeiro Games by the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-4. The Williams sisters entered yesterday's match with a 15-0 career record in the Olympics, winning the gold medal in women's doubles every time they entered the event: in 2000, 2008 and 2012. Streamwood teen arrested in St. Charles robbery

St. Charles police arrested an 18-year-old Streamwood man this weekend on allegations he held up a 7-11 convenience store with a starter pistol, authorities said. Kevin J. Hamilton, of the 3100 block of Medford Court, faces one count of armed robbery stemming from the stickup police say occurred about 3:45 a.m. yesterday at the store at 1705 W. Main St. Full story.

Haze at Elgin factory brings hazardous materials response

No injuries were reported early yesterday after Elgin firefighters responded to a potential hazardous materials situation at the Safety-Kleen facility on the city's southeast side. Firefighters were called to the facility in response to an automatic fire alarm at 1:33 a.m., when they found an industrial building with a light haze, unlocked doors and a pickup truck parked outside, officials said. "Exhilarating" water fights cap Lake Villa Days

While carnival rides, bingo and live music are mainstays of the annual Lake Villa Days festival, what sets it apart from most suburban fests are the wet and wild water fights. Teams of firemen squared off Saturday, with the Wilmot Volunteer Fire Department crossing the border from Wisconsin to take first place. Bears center Grasu likely to miss season with torn ACL

With starting center Hroniss Grasu feared lost for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee, the Bears' already thin offensive line is now looking anorexic. During a practice at Soldier Field this weekend, Grasu crumpled to the turf and was carted off the field. "I actually saw it right in front of me," Bears coach John Fox said. "He just landed pretty funny. We'll see what the extent (is). He was changing direction, and it didn't go well. It was a noncontact injury." Full story.

Hendricks' latest gem helps Cubs complete sweep of A's

Kyle Hendricks pitched into the eighth inning for his fifth win since June and the Chicago Cubs beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 yesterday to complete a three-game sweep. Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler both homered off A's starter Sean Manaea (3-7). Bryant's home run was his 27th this season, one more than the two-time All-Star had in 2015 when he was the NL's rookie of the year. Full story.
