Mayor: Chicago playground project ahead of schedule

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago officials say a program to renovate hundreds of playgrounds in the city will be completed by the end of the year, one year ahead of schedule.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel made the announcement Sunday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new playground at West Haven Park on the city's west side. The West Haven Park playground is one of 88 to be built or refurbished this year. The program began in 2013 and includes more than 300 playgrounds.

Improvements average $125,000 in new playground equipment at each park location for total program cost of $42 million. Playground renovations vary based on community requests. They have featured zip lines, challenging climbers and other play equipment.
