BB gun shootings leave 25 holes in Naperville chiropractor's windows

Dr. Richard Whitney says his chiropractic office in south Naperville is pockmarked with about 25 bullet holes as police seek the person or people responsible for repeatedly causing the damage.

Nine times since last Aug. 20, the windows of Whitney's office at 2712 Forgue Drive, Suite 100, have been shot at with pellets from a BB gun or similar projectiles, police said Tuesday.

"It's hard to explain to patients why we have bullet holes in all our windows," Whitney said. "It's frustrating."

The freshest holes were created at 12:03 a.m. Saturday when someone fired about four shots at the west side of the building from Forgue Drive, police said. Naperville Crime Stoppers on Tuesday offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

Police have been patrolling at night and poring over surveillance footage to identify suspects and suspect vehicles, and Whitney said he hopes their investigation soon will determine who's behind the shootings.

"They've been very diligent in trying to catch who's doing this," Whitney said.

The first shooting at the business just east of Route 59 between Leverenz Road and 93rd Street took place on a Thursday evening - Aug. 20, 2015. The rest have occurred this year on Jan. 5-7, Feb. 5-8, Feb. 11-12, March 26-28, March 29, June 10-13, July 23-25 and July 29-Aug. 1, according to police. Whitney said most of the cases have been on weekend evenings when no patients or staff members have been in the office.

Surveillance video from the most recent instance shows a vehicle slowing down in front of the office while someone inside shoots at the windows. After the shots, the car speeds away heading north on Forgue Drive, police said.

The damage means 11 windows will need to be replaced. Whitney said he's held off on fixing them - at a cost he estimates between $6,000 and $8,000 - in hopes the culprit can be found and stopped first.

But he said the damage already is affecting his budget because the double-pane windows are leaking cooled air to the outside and beginning to let in moisture between the layers of glass.

Police are asking witnesses or anyone who has information about the case to contact Naperville Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006 or napervillecrimestoppers.com. Callers can remain anonymous.
