Crazy Cow Relay winners full of spirit

How fast do you think you could guzzle milk and drag a calf through an arena?

For the 11th year running, Lake County fairgoers have put this peculiar set of skills to the test in the annual Crazy Cow Relay.

For those unfamiliar, the race consisted of eight teams of four taking turns in an arena. Each team member chugged milk and then dragged the calf to the next person, and so on. When all four team members finished, they rushed to the center of the ring to milk a "fake" cow. The timer stopped when the team filled one glass with milk.

After much cheering and chugging, the Jurassic Cow team prevailed to become the 2016 Crazy Cow champion. Jurassic Cow team members included 11-year-old Junior Miss Lake County Brighton Callaway of Lake Villa. For Callaway, the win was extra sweet.

"I have been competing in the Lake County Fair since I was six, but this was my first time winning," Callaway said. "It was so shocking. It helped to have good teamwork. And I love milk, like a lot."

Team Jurassic Cow won with Casey Sramek's 4-month-old Brown Swiss calf, Zeba. The two participating cows were volunteered by their owners. Crazy Cow participant and Little Miss Lake County Darby Leetch, 8, of Round Lake, said pulling Zeba was her favorite part.

"I've never touched a cow before," Leetch said. "It was awesome. And the cow was really cute. But next time, I'd rather to it with water."

Lake County Fair continues through Sunday, July 31.
