Jets make Fitzpatrick signing official; Wilkerson on PUP

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets made the re-signing of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick official Thursday, announcing the move less than 10 minutes before the start of the team's first practice of training camp.

Fitzpatrick and the Jets agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million guaranteed on Wednesday night. The Jets tweeted out a picture of Fitzpatrick signing his deal, and the quarterback fully participated in practice Thursday.

Fitzpatrick was a free agent who was locked in a contract stalemate with the Jets since free agency began in March.

To make room on the roster for Fitzpatrick, the Jets waived punter Tom Hackett. The Australian was an undrafted free agent out of the University of Utah and was expected to compete with fellow countryman Lachlan Edwards, a seventh-round pick, for the punting job.

New York also announced it had placed defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, wide receiver Devin Smith, running back Khiry Robinson, guard James Carpenter, tackle Breno Giacomini and cornerback Kendall James on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Wilkerson, signed to a five-year contract extension two weeks ago, is still recovering from a broken leg that occurred in the season finale at Buffalo last December.

Smith and Robinson were not surprises to start camp on the active/PUP list. Smith tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last December, while Robinson is coming off a broken leg that sidelined him the last half of last season.

Coach Todd Bowles said Carpenter is dealing with a tweaked hamstring, while Giacomini has a back issue that will keep him sidelined for more than a week.

Running back Matt Forte (hamstring) and cornerback Darrelle Revis (wrist surgery) were at practice, but didn't participate.
