Coast Guard plans safety zone for tall ships in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says it is enforcing safety zones around each of the vessels visiting Navy Pier in Chicago as part of the Tall Ships Challenge.

The Coast Guard said Wednesday that the ships are scheduled to participate in events at Navy Pier through Sunday.

The Tall Ships Challenge includes a fleet of ships sailing the Great Lakes and making appearances at cities from Duluth, Minnesota, to Brockville, Ontario, over the summer.

The Coast Guard says spectators and other vessels need to stay at least 300 feet from the ships due to their limited maneuverability. But it applies whether the ships are in transit or moored or anchored.
