Retired Hammond firefighter among boat crash victims

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) - Officials say one of those killed in a Lake Michigan boat accident was a retired Hammond firefighter who was a former leader of the Lake County Marine Unit.

State conservation officers say 68-year-old Richard Wade and 62-year-old Timothy Dunlap, of Lynwood, Illinois, died when their boat crashed into a Lake Michigan break wall near the East Chicago marina.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich tells The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/2a5Of4c ) the fatal crash comes as a shock because Wade had decades of experience on the water. The crash of the 42-foot powerboat happened about 6 a.m. Saturday.

Conservation officers say reduced visibility, speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
