Penguins are returning to Lincoln Park Zoo in new exhibit

CHICAGO (AP) - Penguins are returning to Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo.

The new Robert and Mayari Pritzker Penguin Cove opens to the public Oct. 6.

Floor-to-ceiling windows will allow visitors to get a close-up view of the 13 African penguins that will inhabit the outdoor exhibit. The space features a pool, naturalistic South African landscape and nesting areas camouflaged within exhibit rockwork.

These penguins are native to South Africa and endangered.

The zoo says African penguin populations have been decimated by human impacts, including unsustainable fishing, egg-collecting and oil spills.

They are one of 17 penguin species worldwide.

General Curator Dave Bernier says they are "an engaging, mesmerizing - and vocal - species."
