Ill. delegates differ on impact of Cruz's convention speech

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois delegates to the Republican National Convention are divided in their reactions to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's refusal to endorse Donald Trump for president during his speech in Cleveland.

Trump delegate Cynthia Schaffer (SHAY'-fur) of Tinley Park says it was "terrible" that vanquished Trump rival Cruz didn't formally endorse the New York real estate developer - which earned him boos from delegates at the event Wednesday night.

But Trump supporter John Cabello of Machesney Park and Cruz delegate James Kammer of Monticello (mahn-tih-SEL-loh) believe Cruz did endorse the top man by imploring voters to cast a straight Republican ballot. And they noted that Trump vetted the speech and allowed Cruz to go on.

Cruz is angry because of Trump's campaign insults of Cruz's wife and father.
