Library should stick to its primary focus
It is sad that at a time of declining literacy some libraries feel compelled to be trendy. Park districts offer Zumba classes, and coffee shops and cafes abound in the private sector. Libraries do not need to provide these types of services. I appreciate the job that the Arlington Heights Memorial Library does offering technology services, genealogy and business help, and other learning opportunities that are not readily available elsewhere. I do not, however, appreciate when music programs and other "loud" events are held on the first floor instead of in the Hendrickson Room. Tastes in music differ, and sometimes it is so noisy throughout the library that it is hard to concentrate and read.
Libraries should be reasonably quiet places that encourage and enable reading (using books or electronic devices), studying, reflecting, and learning. I do not want my tax dollars spent on duplicating services offered by other entities to which I am forced to pay taxes or competing with restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues in the private sector that generate sales tax revenue.
