Veteran firefighter named Barrington Countryside acting chief

James Kreher, a fire service professional with nearly 40 years of experience and extensive ties to the community, has been named Acting Fire Chief of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District.

His appointment by the district's board follows the departure of former Chief Jeffrey Swanson, who left Friday upon completion of his three-year employment contract.

Kreher joined the district in January 2014 as deputy chief, administration, when the organization began independent operations.

"I am extremely honored for the opportunity to serve as BCFPD Acting Chief at this exciting time in our history," Chief Kreher said in a news release. "We are a young department with an excellent group of firefighters who are committed to serving our residents with distinction and pride. I look forward to working with everyone in the organization to continually improve our operations and reinforce our commitment to excellence by providing the highest levels of emergency service."

Kreher began his career with the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District in 1978 as a firefighter, and rose steadily through the department's ranks. He has served as chief engineer, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief, and deputy chief.
