Naperville apartment complex uninhabitable after fire

Residents of a Naperville apartment complex were displaced Sunday afternoon after a fire left the building uninhabitable, fire officials said.

At 1:56 p.m., fire crews responded to the 800 block of Pomeroon Street for reports of the multifamily apartment complex smelling of smoke, according to a news release from the Naperville Fire Department.

When firefighters entered the building, they noticed the odor and a "slight haze within the building but no visible fire," officials said. They began searching for the fire and evacuated residents.

A small fire was found in the space between two apartments on the second and third floors, authorities said. The fire, which was extinguished within 10 minutes, damaged the ceiling of the second-floor apartment and the floor of the third-floor apartment, officials said.

A gas line between the two units also was damaged, and utilities throughout the entire building were shut down, fire officials said. No injuries were reported, and none of the other apartments sustained fire damage.

Because the utilities were shut off, the residents of all 20 apartments are being relocated, authorities said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
