Baseball: Fremd makes Elite Eight in Lawler tournament

Fremd's high school baseball team has earned a spot in the Elite Eight of the Phil Lawler Summer State Tournament run by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Assocation.

The Vikings, seeded No. 3 in the 14-team Palatine regional, advanced by trouncing top-seeded New Trier 13-1 on Thursday in the regional final.

It was the second win of the day for Fremd, which earned its regional final berth by topping No. 2 seed Barrington 7-2 earlier in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, Fremd beat Niles West 13-2, and on Monday, the Vikings edged Maine East 4-3.

Elite Eight pool play will be held Monday and Tuesday at North Central College in Naperville and Benedictine University in Lisle to determine four semifinalists.

Fremd's first matchup in the double-elimination phase will be against Naperville Central at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Benedictine.

Other regional champs included Lyons Township, Brother Rice, Huntley, St. Charles North and Warren.

Naperville Central was seeded No. 9 in the Hinsdale South regional and advanced by topping No. 7 Metea Valley 10-3 in the regional final Thursday.

If Fremd wins its game against Naperville Central, it would advance to a 12:30 p.m. Tuesday contest at North Central College. A loss would send the Vikes into a 10 a.m. Tuesday elimination game, also at North Central.

The semifinalists will meet in a pair of elimination games on Thursday at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg. Those games are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The semifinal winners advance to a championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Boomers Stadium.
