Highland Park chiropractor released from jail early

A Highland Park chiropractor sentenced to 18 months of periodic jail in January for sexually abusing a client during a treatment session has been released from his jail term 12 months early.

Lake County Judge Daniel Shanes stayed the final 12 months of the sentence for Kevin G. Dutton, 40, of Chicago. If Dutton gets into trouble, Shanes warned, periodic imprisonment can be reinstated or the sentence can be changed to a prison term.

Shanes awarded Dutton the early release after Dutton paid all court-ordered fines, completed 200 hours of public service 12 months early, and was exemplary in other court-ordered requirements.

"It's not often that probation reports show that a defendant is doing great," Shanes said before granting Dutton his early release.

Dutton will continue to serve 36 months of probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

"I approached this as an opportunity," he said during the hearing. "Being in this situation has helped me a lot and helped me grow as a person."

Assistant State's Attorney Lauren Kalcheim-Rothenberg objected to the early release due to the nature of the offense. Dutton pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for inappropriately touching a 22-year-old female patient during a chiropractic treatment at the Wellness Circle on the 800 block of Central Avenue. He worked at the fitness center as an independent contractor at the time of the 2014 attack.

He could have been sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
