Summerfest returns to Gurnee for a day of summer fun

After a break last year, the Grandwood Park Civic Association is bringing back Summerfest to Gurnee.

"We do it for the fun, for the people in the neighborhood," said Linda Kippes, the association's treasurer.

Held on Saturday, July 16, events start early at 8 a.m. with a 5K walk/run. People can register at the community center at 36630 N. Hutchins Road, Gurnee, at 7:30 a.m. There is a $10 entry fee.

Festivities resume at 2 p.m. with registration for the bike parade at Adams's Park, which is at 36481 N. Streamwood Drive. This year's bike parade theme is superheroes so children and adults can dress up as their favorite superhero, decorate their wagon or bike and join the parade.

At 3 p.m., the food and beverage tent will open and serve hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, pulled pork and ice cream. Families can enjoy activities, such as family bingo and games, a bags tournament or dance to music that will be played by a DJ starting at 7 p.m.

Something new this year is the craft fair, which will feature vendors from around the area.

The day ends with a bonfire that begins at dusk.

Admission is free.
