Wingard considered for Jim Thorpe Award

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming sophomore free safety Andrew Wingard is among 39 defensive backs across the nation on the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award.

The award has been presented annually since 1986 to college football's best defensive back by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. It was established to honor the legendary Jim Thorpe.

The preseason list of potential candidates was announced Monday.

Wingard is coming off a freshman season that saw him earn first team freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America.

Wingard led the Mountain West Conference and ranked No. 4 in the NCAA in solo tackles in 2015 (6.9 solo tackles per game) and ranked No. 2 in the conference and 12th in the nation in total tackles (10.2 per game).
