One dead in fiery Naperville crash

One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning on the 1400 block of North Washington Street in Naperville, authorities said.

Police and the DuPage County coroner's office said the name of the driver is being withheld pending positive identification of the deceased and notification of family members.

Authorities said police and firefighters responded at 1:43 a.m. for a report of a crash and fire. The first units on the scene found a 2015 Dodge ProMaster van fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the driver dead inside the van.

Washington Street was closed between Bauer Road and 14th Street until roughly 5:50 a.m.

Police said their preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was heading south on Washington between Bauer and 14th when it left the road, struck a tree and burst into flames. The investigation is continuing.

An autopsy took place Monday, but the coroner's office had not yet identified the driver as of Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call police at (630) 305-5379.
