EPA to remove contaminated soil from East Chicago complex

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to remove lead-contaminated soil from a housing complex in East Chicago.

The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/29wVW5n) the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry is advising parents at the West Calumet Housing Complex not to let their children play in the dirt and to wash their hands after playing outside.

The EPA plans to begin covering patches of bare dirt at the complex with mulch to provide a temporary, protective barrier until EPA can dig up and remove the lead-contaminated soil.

Residents also are being told to regularly wash children's toys, remove shoes before walking into their homes and avoid digging or gardening in their yards.
