Edible Experiments at the Bartlett Library

On Thursday, June 30, teens met at the Bartlett Library in order to enjoy some edible experiments.

In total, there were six experiments: Finding iron in cereal, UV light with tap and tonic water, gravity free water, candy acidity test, pop density and ice cream in a bag.

The first was to show the teens the physical iron in cereal. They put cereal into plastic bags and filled them with water. Once they crushed the cereal up and waited a while, they ran a magnet against the bag to see that there were a few particles that moved.

Next was seeing that tonic and tap water had different reactions when exposed to UV light. The tonic water looked blue while the tap water remained clear.

The teens had a lot of fun with this next experiment. They were brought outside to fill cups with water and put paper over the lids. They would then flip the paper and cup over to see if the paper would suction to the cup, making it so that the water wouldn't spill. Sometimes it worked, and other times water was splashed everywhere causing lots of laughter.

Once back inside, they tested the acidity of candy by putting Lemonheads, Skittles or Sixlets into cups of water. When they put baking soda into the water, and if the candy was acidic, then bubbles would come to the surface.

Next, teens saw that when cans of Coke and Diet Coke were put into water, the Coke can sunk under the water more, meaning that it was more dense than the Diet Coke.

To finish up the program, the teens made ice cream in a bag. To do this, they used sugar, milk, vanilla, salt, ice and Ziploc bags. They mixed the mile, sugar and vanilla in a small bag, and then put that bag into a bigger one that contained ice and salt. After shaking the bags together for a while, the teens got to taste their creation.

An upcoming Youth Services program is "Battle Bunny Book Mash-Up" on Thursday, July 7 at 10 a.m. Grades 4-5 Do you enjoy writing and illustrating your own stories? Have you ever wanted to draw in a book? Now you can do both. You will create your own literary mash-ups based on Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett's Battle Bunny.
