Jeffersonville police stop using body cameras, cite costs

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The police department in the southern Indiana city of Jeffersonville says it's suspending its body camera program as a new state law goes into effect.

The News and Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/29apENJ) that the Jeffersonville Police Department says new requirements under the law are too costly. Police say services that are on the market that would meet the law's requirements are too expensive. The department said it would look for "viable options" to possibly reinstate the program.

The department started using body cameras in May 2014. About a half-dozen officers were using the cameras.

The Clarksville police department also is suspending its body camera program. The police chief cited storage requirements and control over who can review footage.

Proponents of the new law city wide support and unanimous legislative passage.
