Suburban lawmakers' take on stopgap budget deal

Illinois lawmakers passed a six-month stopgap spending plan Thursday with just hours to spare before the end of a fiscal year marred by a historic budget standoff.

Here's what some suburban lawmakers had to say about it.

"We're kicking our problems down the road. ... both sides are afraid to face voters and tell them the truth, that they knowingly and willingly violated the Constitution. After the election, what they'll be seeing is a massive tax increase."

- Democratic state Rep. Jack Franks of Marengo

"The importance of this funding can't be overlooked, but let us be clear. Let us not go back to our constituents and say we passed a budget. We've put our state in a terrible financial situation."

- Republican state Rep. David Harris of Arlington Heights

"Our charge is to start acting as colleagues ... It's the best we can achieve at this juncture. It is a compromise."

- Republican state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove

"This is a positive step today because of all the people that worked together. The people of Illinois have seen that we've come together today."

- Republican state Rep. Patti Bellock of Hinsdale

"While today's vote does not solve all of the problems caused by the impasse, it does move us forward in a responsible manner that will help residents across our community."

- Democratic state Rep. Marty Moylan of Des Plaines

"This is a positive development. The first substantive, real, bipartisan product we've had in awhile. ... I commend the leadership on the other side of the aisle. We can keep the lights on for six more months."

- Republican state Sen. Matt Murphy of Palatine
