Home plate umpire Jerry Layne hit by foul tip, leaves game

ATLANTA (AP) - Home plate umpire Jerry Layne has left the game between the Indians and Braves after being hit by a foul tip.

Layne was staggered by the foul tip hit by Atlanta's Nick Markakis in the bottom of the eighth inning. The ball appeared to hit the side of his head beyond the area covered by his mask. He stepped back and grabbed Cleveland catcher Chris Gimenez's arm to keep from falling.

Braves assistant trainer Jim Lovell escorted Layne from the field.

There was a delay while Hunter Wendelstedt, who had been the second base umpire, put on the gear to complete the game behind the plate.
