NYC medical examiner: Hedge fund manager killed himself

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City medical examiner has confirmed a hedge fund manager charged with insider trading had killed himself.

The findings were issued Wednesday in the death of Sanjay Valvani. The 44-year-old died from stab wounds of the neck.

Police said previously that Valvani's wife found him Monday evening in a bedroom at their Brooklyn Heights home. Police said a knife was found nearby as well as a handwritten note declaring his innocence.

Last week, Valvani pleaded not guilty to criminal charges that he persuaded a former senior Food and Drug Administration official to give him inside information about generic drug approvals, allowing him to earn about $25 million illegally.

If convicted, Valvani could have faced up to 85 years in prison.

Valvani's attorneys called his death "a horrible tragedy."
