Forest district offers orienteering class

Area residents can get an introduction to the sport of orienteering through a "Navigation: Orienteering for Beginners" class offered by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

"Orienteering is a very family-friendly sport and a great way to explore one of our most beautiful preserves," said Joe Cantore, forest district president.

The class will be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien.

"Waterfall Glen is one of the most ecologically impressive parcels of open space in DuPage County, if not northern Illinois," said Linda Painter, District 3 forest preserve district commissioner.

In orienteering, participants use compasses and special maps to choose the fastest routes between markers on a designated course. At each program, district staff will explain how to read the detailed terrain information on an orienteering map and how to use a compass.

Participants then will use their new skills to complete a beginner-level course consisting of 12 control points over a 1.2-mile course.

No previous orienteering experience is necessary and participants can complete the course at their own pace in this noncompetitive program. Maps and loaner compasses will be provided. Some parts of the course are off-trail and accessible only over rough terrain; participants should dress accordingly.

The program is for all ages, but children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person. Register by contacting dupageforest.org or (630) 933-7208.
