State agency certifies faculty union at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Labor Relations Board has certified a new faculty union at Northern Illinois University.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1ZTVr7G ) the new union will be called the United Faculty Alliance of Northern Illinois University. The group filed its intent to unionize in April.

The union will represent more than 600 tenured and tenure-track faculty at NIU. It is affiliated with the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the University Professionals of Illinois, American Federation of Teachers and the American Association of University Professors.

NIU history professor Rosemany Feurer said the union is looking forward to forming its bargaining committee.
