Aurora's GreenFest celebrates sustainable living

It still isn't easy being green, as Kermit the Frog and that misunderstood witch from "Wicked" can attest, but it's not as hard as it used to be.

That was kind of the message Saturday when Aurora held its seventh annual GreenFest to celebrate sustainable environmental choices and, in the process, provide entertainment with singers, dancers and live animal displays.

The fest's main focus, though, was on environmental issues, including a kids' eco-village (complete with craft opportunities using recycled materials), a community trade show, food cooked on a solar oven and the chance to get a close-up look at a Tesla electric car.

The festival included activities both inside and outside the Prisco Community Center on the west bank of the Fox River.

Mary Ann Reynolds of Aurora, a volunteer with Fox Valley Park District who was working at the festival, said Saturday she loves telling people about the different plants and getting people excited about wildlife.

"There's educational advantages in talking and collaborating together," Reynolds said. "I'm so thankful for GreenFest. Everything here is just working toward making the Earth a better place."

A happy life by being green? Probably not a bad goal for most of us, even if we're not a talking frog or a flying witch.
