Poland appoints economist as new central bank head

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Poland's lawmakers have approved economist Adam Glapinski to be the nation's new top banker.
Glapinski succeeds Marek Belka, whose six-year term as head of the National Bank of Poland expired Friday.
The 66-year-old Glapinski is a member of the bank's Monetary Policy Council and its board of managers, and is considered to be a moderate. He has vowed to protect the bank's independence from political pressure.
Glapinski is an associate of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the ruling conservative Law and Justice party that is focused on improving living standards for those on the lowest income through a system of financial benefits.
In the early 1990s he led ministries related to Poland's economic development.
