High schools: Repeat Bob Frisk Paddock honors for Barrington boys, Fremd girls

Some things never seem to change.

In fact, the exciting races for boys and girls varsity sports supremacy in the Mid-Suburban League hit the finish line in 2015-16 just like they did last year.

Barrington's boys once again ruled the Bob Frisk Paddock Cup, and Fremd's girls returned to the No. 1 position in the Bob Frisk Paddock Trophy.

The usual suspects jockeyed back and forth throughout the fall, winter and spring sports seasons before officially wrapping up the two titles during the third week in May.

Barrington's boys won the Bob Frisk Paddock Cup for the 10th time and fifth in the past six school years. Fremd was second and Palatine third.

Fremd's girls won the Bob Frisk Paddock Trophy for the seventh time in the past eight years. Barrington was second and Hersey third.

There are 13 sports each school year that determine MSL varsity champions, and each activity plays an equal role in determining what high schools stand alone at the top when the boys and girls wrap up another busy year of intense competition.

Conference champions earn 14 points, the runner-up 12, third place 11 and then the others down the line. There is a formula that determines varsity sports that do not have overall standings but only division finishes.

Only first-division or top six schools in each competition are published, per a 1997 agreement with the Daily Herald and MSL Board of Control.

After setting a Paddock Cup record last year by averaging 11.65 points per varsity sport (out of 14), Barrington's boys wrapped up No. 1 this time with a solid 10.50 average.

Fremd's boys finished with an average of 9.46 points per sport, and the Vikings were followed by No. 3 Palatine (9.28), No. 4 Prospect (9.15), No. 5 Conant (8.00) and No. 6 Hersey (7.58).

Fremd's girls won the Paddock Trophy by averaging 10.69 points per varsity sport out of 14. The all-time girls record of 12.35 was set by Palatine in 1982-83.

Rounding out the first division in the Trophy competition were No. 2 Barrington (10.08), No. 3 Hersey (9.85), No. 4 Prospect (9.42) No. 5 Buffalo Grove (8.62) and No. 6 Palatine (7.88).

In June of 2009 the two Mid-Suburban League varsity sports awards given by Paddock Publications officially added the name of Bob Frisk, who originated both awards and retired from the Daily Herald in 2008 after 50 years at the newspaper as an enthusiastic supporter of high school sports.
