US Rep. Walorski: Trump comments on judge inappropriate

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski has condemned GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump's comments about the impartiality of a Latino federal judge presiding over lawsuits involving Trump University.

The northern Indiana Republican said in a statement Monday, "Questioning a judge's impartiality based on his ethnicity is not only inappropriate, it has no place in American society."

Trump has said U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego cannot be impartial in the suits because his parents were born in Mexico and Trump wants to build a wall along the border. Curiel is a former federal prosecutor who was born in East Chicago, Indiana, to parents who came from Mexico in the 1920s.

Walorski is believed to be the first prominent Indiana Republican to criticize Trump over his comments on Curiel.
