Dems blast state GOP over Trump jabs at Indiana-born judge

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Democrats are criticizing state Republican officeholders for not condemning racially tinged remarks that GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump made about a federal judge who's also an Indiana native.

Indiana Democratic Chairman John Zody said Monday that Hoosier Republicans should stick up for U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego, who was raised in East Chicago and graduated from Indiana University's Maurer School of Law in Bloomington.

Curiel is overseeing a civil case brought against Trump University. Trump says Curiel cannot be impartial because his parents were born in Mexico and Trump wants to build a wall along the border.

Northern Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski has condemned Trump's comments as "inappropriate."

The Indiana Republican Party called Zody's remarks a "stunt" that distracts from the "real issues."
