Softball: Carmel, Antioch to resume play Monday

Saturday's Class 3A Wauconda softball sectional final was suspended in the top of the second inning due to rain. Fourth-seeded Carmel Catholic leads No. 2 Antioch 2-0.

The game will be resumed at 4:30 p.m. Monday, pushing back the Hampshire supersectional to Tuesday.

Carmel scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning. Dani DeLozier drew a one-out walk from Antioch starter Stephanie Bonaguidi. Amanda Elert reached on an infield error, and a walk to Claire Petrus loaded the bases. Emma Bartz then singled sharply into left field, scoring DeLozier and courtesy runner Emily Haley.

Petrus, who earned her school record-tying 51st career win against Wauconda in the sectional semifinals, allowed only a one-out walk to Jill Foote in the bottom of the first.

Bonaguidi retired the first batter in the Carmel second. Lauren Caffarelli had a 1-0 count on her when heavy rain forced the umpires to stop the game. After just five minutes, the game was called and suspended until Monday.

The winner faces Sterling in the Hampshire supersectional, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
