Emissions testing resumption causes lines, headaches

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (AP) - The resumption of emissions testing in Illinois has caused a log-jam of automobiles in McHenry County.

The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald reported (http://bit.ly/25BuSer ) a line of 150 vehicles Tuesday with waits exceeding two hours at a site in Crystal Lake.

Secretary of State Jesse White suspended testing as a requirement for drivers to renew vehicle registrations in December after the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency stopped mailing notices because of the budget crisis.

When IEPA began again recently, White announced emissions tests would resume.

Crystal Lake Police Sgt. Dan Hulata says drivers were waiting when he arrived at 6 a.m. - two hours before the center opened. After jammed lines last week he set up cones and directed motorists.

Motorists can schedule appointments at 40 testing sites.
