Music notes: Herman's Hermits bring the British invasion to Arcada

Can't you hear my Hermits?

In its heyday, Manchester's British pop band Herman's Hermits was slinging hits on both sides of the pond. For more than five decades (and with a few lineup shifts), the band has been playing its upbeat hits, such as "I'm Into Something Good" and "Silhouettes." Catch them, featuring Peter Noone, when they play the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. $49-$89. (630) 962-7000 or arcadalive.com. 8 p.m. Saturday, June 4

Cobra conjures up rap, rock

Northern Indiana hip-hop artist David Costa has made some big strides on the music scene, including stints at South By Southwest, Q101's Jamboree and the Vans Warped Tour. He brings his thoughtful lyrics and rock background to Chicago's Cobra Lounge, where he's joined by modern rockers Menacerno - featuring the talents of Maggie O'Keefe, Pete Neumer, Brian Matson, Joe Martinez and Wheaton's Matt Buckingham. The Dead Hands and Big Paraid playing an acoustic set start the night off with some solid Chicago rock. Cobra Lounge, 235 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago. $9-$10. (312) 226-6300 or cobralounge.com. 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4

Local beats

As Kings of Class, Wheaton natives Erik Johnson and Bobby De Maria and their musical partners have been working hard playing host to national and international artists at the weekly Afterlife dance party. This week, they showcase local talent, including Bartlett's Akib Khanani, Robert Nikho of Niles, Park Ridge native DangerWayne, Palatine's Milk N Cooks and more. Catch them up close at Annex Nightclub before many of them hit Spring Awakening's big stages next weekend. Annex Nightclub, 1958 W. North Ave., Chicago. Free before midnight, $5 after. (773) 278-4646 or annexnightclub.com. 10 p.m. Saturday, June 4

It's the perfect time of year ...

The Barenaked Ladies provide a rousing start to Ravinia Festival's summer season Thursday, June 9.

Highland Park's premier outdoor venue gets its summer season under way with a set by the Barenaked Ladies, the Canadian alternative rock act behind the hits "One Week," "Pinch Me," "Brian Wilson" and more. (And we can't forget one of my favorite Christmas pop collaborations, the Sarah McLachlan team-up "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings.") While neither barenaked nor actually ladies, the quartet should still provide a good soundtrack for the first of many beautiful summer nights on the Ravinia lawn, 418 Sheridan Road, Highland Park. $33 in advance for lawn ($38 the day of); pavilion seats start at $70. (847) 266-5100 or ravinia.org. 6:30 p.m. (gates open at 4 p.m.) Thursday, June 9
