Police: Houston shooter fired 212 rounds

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston police say an Army veteran of two Afghanistan tours who killed one person and wounded several others during a weekend rampage fired 212 rounds from his military-style assault rifle before a SWAT officer fatally shot him from more than 100 yards away.

Police Lt. John McGalin said Tuesday that investigators believe 25-year-old Dionisio Garza III was experiencing a "mental health crisis" when he opened fire Sunday at a Houston auto detail shop, killing a customer.

Relatives of Garza, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, have said he was haunted by his Afghanistan deployment.

McGalin said investigators believe Garza broke into an adjacent tire store Saturday and spent the night there before emerging Sunday. Authorities believe he targeted people at random.

A Houston Police Deptartment vehicle hit many times by gunfire is removed from the area Sunday, May 29, 2016, in Houston.
