Authorities say boy, 12, missing in Kankakee River

WILMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - A 12-year-old boy is missing and his 13-year-old sister was taken to a hospital after authorities say the children became trapped in water near a dam on the Kankakee River.

Authorities in Wilmington, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago, responded to the scene around 6 p.m. Monday.

Police Chief Phil Arnold says the siblings went into the water and two bystanders tried to help. Eventually the Good Samaritans and the girl were pulled out.

Arnold says recovery efforts for the boy were halted because of nightfall but will resume at dawn.

Deputy Fire Chief Todd Friddle says the girl was taken to a hospital in serious condition. An adult bystander was also hospitalized.

It wasn't immediately clear how the children ended up in the water. Friddle says the area is marked with "no swimming" signs.
