Naperville restaurant prepares to reopen after minor fire

A small kitchen fire struck a Naperville Indian restaurant Tuesday afternoon, but the owner of Cuisine of India says his restaurant plans to be back open for business by Wednesday.

Owner Rahul Saigal said the restaurant at 1163 E. Ogden Ave. will replace all of the smoke-damaged food it had in storage after a minor fire that he believes began in the kitchen's ventilation hood equipment.

"We have to get everything fresh," he said Tuesday afternoon. "It was a small fire, so we'll be up and running tomorrow morning."

Saigal said the restaurant never had suffered a fire before during its 24 years in Naperville, including five years at its current location in the Iroquois Center strip mall at Ogden Avenue just west of Naper Boulevard.

Naperville firefighters saw smoke coming from the roof of the one-story restaurant when they arrived about 12:57 p.m., according to a news release from Bureau Chief James Kubinski. Crews determined the fire was coming from the kitchen, and they safely evacuated everyone inside. No one was injured.

While the fire caused limited damage, authorities said the restaurant needs to be inspected by the DuPage County Health Department before reopening. The cause of the fire cause remains under investigation.

Crews from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District and Nicor assisted with the response, while firefighters from Wheaton, Downers Grove, Bolingbrook and Plainfield covered other Naperville stations.
