Baseball: Rezny's gem lifts Rolling Meadows past Addison Trail

Rolling Meadows extended its baseball season thanks to a strong pitching effort from Alex Rezny on Monday.

The Mustangs topped host Addison Trail 7-0 in a Class 4A regional play-in game after Rezny tossed a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks and benefited from error-free defense behind him.

Jack Lincoln finished 4-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI, and Ryan Laboda homered and drove in 2 runs for Rolling Meadows (7-23).

The Mustangs advance to a 4:30 p.m. Wednesday semifinal matchup against regional host Lake Park.

Hersey 12, Waukegan 3: The host Huskies came up with a 10-run fourth inning to send their season to the regional semifinal round.

Paul Tokar had a big day with the bat, finishing with 3 doubles and 2 RBI. Other big hitters included Tyler Haffey (3 hits, double), Matt Abfall (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Tanner Luke (2 hits, double).

Matt Johnson pitched 4 shutout innings to finish with a complete-game win which included 6 hits and 6 strikeouts.

Pinch runner Buzz Lindgren scored twice for Hersey (14-18-1), which advances to a 4:30 p.m. game at Warren, the top seed in the Stevenson sectional.

Buffalo Grove 11, Zion-Benton 4: Zach Fricke doubled twice and Chase Marsh and Kurt Kelly both drove in 2 runs to help propel the Bison to a regional play-in victory.

Justin Meyer got the win after allowing 1 hit over 3 innings for Buffalo Grove (17-17).

The Bison advance to a 4:30 p.m. Wednesday matchup with regional host Glenbrook North, the No. 4 seed in the Loyola sectional.

Maine West 18, Mather 0 (5 inn.): The host Warriors had success in all phases, producing 16 hits and getting a combined 2-hitter from Matt Willett (0 hits, 3 IP) and Brandon Smith (2 hits, 2 IP).

Jacob Cabral, Sean Russell, Brad Uidl, Cory Scholler and Brian Bojarski each 2 hits apiece for Maine West (14-16), and Troy Johnson had 3 hits.

The Warriors advance to host a Thursday matchup with the No. 5 sectional seed, Loyola.

Leyden 9, Prosser 2: The host Eagles improved to 16-17 as Kevin Nevarez earned the pitching decision. Next up for Leyden is a 4 p.m. Wednesday matchup against Mid-Suburban League champ Elk Grove in a regional semifinal at Maine West.

Glenbard North 12, Hoffman Estates 8: The visiting Panthers made use of three big innings to advance to a Wednesday regional semifinal contest against St. Charles North at Hoffman Estates.

The Hawks (12-18) scored in each inning from the third on and Lucas Barnes and John Keller had homers.

Highland Park 3, Wheeling 2: Brian Maloney finished 3-for-3 and hit a solo homer, but the visiting Wildcats (12-22) came up 1 run short in regional play-in action.

Maloney started and kept the Giants scoreless through four innings before they produced a single run in each of the final three innings.

Conant 4, Fenwick 3 (8 inn.): Jim McLaughlin hit a solo homer as the visiting Cougars scored twice in the top of the eighth inning and held on to earn a nonconference win.

Logan Smith and Jack Reiger both had 2 hits for Conant (17-16), while Matt Mills earned a win after 3 innings of scoreless relief and Josh Pozniak got a three-out save.

Huntley 5, Palatine 0: The visiting Pirates slipped a game under .500 to 17-18 after producing just 3 hits in a nonconference road loss.

Elk Grove 6, Niles North 1: Jack McEnroe homered and doubled, finishing 2-for-4 with 5 RBI as the visiting Grens (23-12) picked up a nonconference victory behind strong pitching from starter Joe Lopez (6 IP, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts).
