Hanover Park planning to buy 3 properties for parking lot

Hanover Park is planning to purchase three properties on Ontarioville Road and turn the space into a parking lot for the village's future downtown.

The two houses and one business at 1909, 1931 and 1945 Ontarioville Road are all owned by one person and have been vacant and deteriorating for a while. Hanover Park will pay about $258,000 for the properties just south of the Hanover Park Metra station.

Once the village takes ownership, the structures on the properties will be demolished promptly, according to village documents.

“This is really an opportunity for us to capture some property during the planning stages of our downtown and transit oriented development plans,” Mayor Rod Craig said.

A parking lot will benefit the future downtown and any festivals the village plans in the area, Craig said.

“It will be good for the tavern and the animal hospital in the area, too,” Craig said.

The village board was set to vote on the purchase Thursday, but the item was taken off the agenda to make some final tweaks to the agreement.

Craig said he expects trustees will vote on the land purchase at the next village board meeting on June 2.

According to village documents, there are no current tenants living in the houses or occupying the former Ames Real Estate building.
