Track and field: Big A-10 success for Grayslake Central's Brewster

Davidson junior Will Brewster enjoyed a strong performance at the Atlantic 10 outdoor track and field championships in Fairfax, Va.

The Grayslake Central High School gradute had an individual victory in the 10,000-meter run for Davidson on the first day of the meet, turning in a 30:22.80 clocking while outkicking second-place finisher Grayson Morgan (30:29.35) to secure the title.

It was the second A-10 individual crown for Brewster, who won the 5,000-meter at the indoor championships.

Brewster took second in the 5,000-meter on the second day in Fairfax, stopping the clock at 14:27.34.

Earlier this year, he broke the 5,000 school record with a 14:07.79, which puts him in qualifying position for the first round of the NCAA championships.

Softball

North Central College freshman Rachele Belletini (Warren) made a solid impact in her freshman season.

Starting in 36 games, she finished with a .264 batting average in 110 at-bats, recording 29 hits, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run and 16 RBI. She also recorded 79 put outs and 75 assists, finishing with a .928 fielding percentage.

The Cardinals finished 20-18 and 8-6 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, finishing third in the regular season and second in the conference tournament.

Men's track

Middlebury College (Vermont) junior Brendan Wood (Stevenson) took second at the NESCAC Conference meet in the 3K steeplechase. It was only his second time competing in the event. He had a time of 9:26.88.

Women's lacrosse

Augustana (17-2) rode a strong defensive effort to its second straight CCIW Tournament championship defeating Illinois Wesleyan 15-3 in the title game.

A goal by the Vikings' Olivia Mayer (Libertyville) tied the game at 1-1.

The visiting Titans (15-4) went ahead 2-1 but Augustana responded with the final 7 goals of the half.

Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich) had the assist for the tying goal (2-2) at the 23:38 mark. She scored two minutes later to put the hosts ahead for good.

Handrahan led the offense with 2 goals and 5 assists. Mayer had a game-high 4 ground balls and shared game-high honors in caused turnovers.

Academic award

Former Barrington softball standout Raegan Fingerman was awarded the 2015-2016 Athletics award certificate of academic achievement by Wisconsin-Parkside with a grade-point average of 3.5. Fingerman also made the dean's list.

Men's soccer

St. Viator senior Patrick Hickey (Des Plaines) and Barrington senior Hans Pallan have committed to Illinois Wesleyan.

Football

Lake Zurich senior offensive lineman Samuel Soto and senior defensive lineman Nic Zanichelli have committed to Illinois Wesleyan.
