Baseball: Giusti reaches win No. 400 with Prospect's victory
Prospect's late rally took baseball coach Ross Giusti to a lofty milestone on Monday at Larry Pohlman field.
The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a tie and going on to an 8-6 victory in Mid-Suburban League play.
That result gave Giusti career victory No. 400 in his coaching career.
Richie Baszek had an RBI triple in the sixth inning for Prospect (18-8, 10-6), and the Knights' other run in the inning score on an error.
Trevor Engquist continued to swing a hot bat, as he homered for the second straight game and also had a double to finish 4-for-4 with 5 RBI.
Ben Courtney pitched 6 innings of 8-hit ball to get the win, and Jacob Arndt got the final three outs for a save.
JT Kolderup homered and finished with 3 RBI for Fremd (15-10, 10-6), and Justin Castillo and Jack Molnar also had 2 hits for the Vikes.
Buffalo Grove 1, Schaumburg 0: Tyler Rundquist had a pair of hits and drove in Chase Marsh in the fourth inning with the game's only run as the host Bison prevailed in MSL play.
Jack Vaselaney pitched a complete game for Buffalo Grove (12-17, 7-9), allowing 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Saxons starter Parker Nolan allowed 4 hits over 6 innings. Thomas Larsen had the game's only extra-base hit, a double, for Schaumburg (12-15, 5-11).
Rolling Meadows 10, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn.): Alex Rezny kept the visting Hawks' bats under control and the Mustangs' bats did the rest, producing all the scoring in a 4-run fourth and a 5-run fifth.
Trent McNally doubled and drove in 2 runs for Rolling Meadows (5-21, 5-11), and Jack Lincoln doubled and scored twice.
Hoffman Estates slipped to 10-16 overall.
Palatine 11, Wheeling 1 (6 inn.): Danny Schneberger and Matt Lamm homered to power the Pirates' victory at Wheeling in MSL action.
Schneberger finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Lamm was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Other big hitters for Palatine (17-4, 11-5) included Anthony Portera (2-for-4, 4 RBI) and Charlie Van Dyke (2-for-4).
Chris Refka produced a dominant starting effort, striking out 13 and allowing 6 hits in a 6-inning complete game.
Alex Khatcherian finished 3-for-3 for Wheeling (12-20, 3-13).
Notre Dame 6, St. Viator 2: Cole Kmet homered and doubled, driving in both runs for the host Lions in an East Suburban Catholic Conference loss.
Dan Sullivan and Michael Wittich also had 2 hits apiece for St. Viator (16-15).
Barrington 9, Elk Grove 2: The visiting Broncos banged out 12 hits against four Elk Grove pitchers to win what amounted to a tune-up game between the MSL East and West champions in advance of Friday's 4:30 p.m. title game at Barrington.
Zach Balogh doubled and finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI to pace Barrington (25-7) as Colin Starvel, Tristan Michaels and Jacob Chapman each produced 2 hits.
A.J. Navarro and Jack McEnroe both hit solo homers for Elk Grove (19-12).
Jake Zyzda earned the victory after pitching 5 shutout inning which included 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Conant 7, Hersey 5: In a game that featured five lead changes, Conant produced the last one by scoring 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning.
The key hit in the seventh was a 2-run double by Jack Reiger, who also homered and finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Logan Smith had a pair of hits and drove in 2 runs for the Cougars (16-16) as Matt Mills got a win and Kevin Sindewald pitched an inning and got a save.
Hersey (13-15) got 2 hits apiece from Tyler Haffey and Tanner Luke.
Glenbrook North 14, Maine West 0 (5 inn.): The visiting Spartans pushed across 8 runs in the sixth inning to pick up a Central Suburban North victory over the Warriors (12-14).
Leyden 13, Proviso East 1 (4 inn.): The Eagles improved to 15-16 overall by handling the Pirates as Jeremy Borges doubled and drove in 3 runs in a 3-for-3 plate performance and Kevin Nevarez allowed only an unearned run and 3 hits to get the victory.
